His reaction to his dismissal has seen him receive one demerit point and an official ICC reprimand
West Indies allrounder Carlos Brathwaite has been officially reprimanded by the ICC after his reaction to his dismissal against England on Friday.
The 30-year-old was adjudged to have been caught behind by Jos Buttler off the bowling of Jofra Archer. West Indies had no reviews remaining after Sheldon Cottrell had unsuccessfully attempted to overturn his own dismissal to Archer.
It initially appeared that the ball had struck Brathwaite’s arm on its way into the gloves of England wicketkeeper Buttler. However, technology later showed that the ball had deflected off the top edge of Brathwaite’s bat before clipping his forearm.
His frustrated reaction has seen him receive one demerit point for breaching Level One of the ICC Code of Conduct.
He was also found to have breached Article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to showing dissent to an umpire’s decision.
Brathwaite was one of three men to fall victim to Archer.
Because Brathwaite admitted the offence and accepted his sanction, there was no need for a formal hearing.
Demerit points remain on a player’s record for two years after being imposed. A total of four such points within the 24-month period results in the points being converted into suspension points, which leads to a ban.
A sum of two suspension points equates to a ban of one Test, two ODIs or two T20 internationals.
The punishment topped off a poor day for Brathwaite, whose five overs posed little threat to Joe Root and Chris Woakes, costing Jason Holder’s side 35 runs. England strolled to an eight-wicket victory.
