Awarded the Rachel Heyhoe-Flint Award for the best female cricketer in the world at the end of 2018, Smriti Mandhana has established herself among the finest players in the women’s game.
Since making her international debut in 2013 against Bangladesh, she has become a consistent presence at the top of India’s batting order.
A first hundred in the colours of her country would arrive in 2016, albeit in a losing cause as India were defeated by Australia at the Bellerive Oval.
She would then be frustrated by injury after rupturing her anterior cruciate ligament, though she returned at the 2017 World Cup, making 90 against England in the group stage – the only game that the host nation would lose in the tournament.
Since then, she has continued to thrive.
During the 2018 World T20, she became the third Indian to rack up 1,000 runs in WT20I matches.
She then ended that year as the women’s game’s leading run-scorer worldwide in ODIs, with 669 runs at an average of 66.90.
