As one of Bangladesh’s most experienced players, with 104 caps, Khatun has earned the right to captain her side for two years prior to now leading them into their next global tournament.
Having made her debut in 2011 against Ireland in ODIs, she has seen success throughout her playing career with both bat and ball. Her T20 debut followed in August 2012 against the same opposition and from that moment on she has been a star of the Bangladesh side.
Born in Khulna, she grew up playing alongside boys in age-group cricket before being scouted for the Khulna Women where she made a case for herself between 2008 and 2011, resulting in her being welcomed to the national side.
She has performed impressively in both white-ball formats, and she holds the highest ODI score of any Bangladesh woman - 75 not out against India in 2013. In the T20 format (as of February 1, 2020), from 45 innings she has scored over 500 runs, with a high score of 49 not out.
It is not only with the bat that she excels, her terrific off-spin makes her a useful allrounder, and she was placed fifth in the ICC T20 allrounder rankings just before the T20 World Cup.
Her T20 best bowling figures place her third in the all-time list for Bangladesh women - 4-6 in 2012 against Sri Lanka. Khatun has also taken the most wickets in T20s by a Bangladesh woman, picking up 60 at an average of 17.73.
She claims that one of her favourite memories on the cricket field is when she was part of the squad that won their first ever Women’s Asia Cup title in 2018, where they defeated the defending champions, India, with her captaincy call coming after this tournament.
