The 26-year-old bowling allrounder had long been touted as an international cricketer of the future before finally making her bow for Australia in 2018.
Carey, a medium-pace bowler and a useful middle order batsman, was initially called up to the Women’s T20 World Cup at the age of just 19 as a replacement for Sarah Coyte.
Australia won, though Carey did not play a game.
The same occurred four years later; Grace Harris was ruled out through injury, with Carey – still without a cap at this stage – brought in.
Again, however, she did not take part on the field.
Having made her domestic debut eight years earlier for Lendlease Breakers in New South Wales, she finally arrived on the international stage in 2018, taking the field in an ODI against India in 2018.
A T20I debut followed soon afterwards – against the same opposition, before she was once again named in a squad for the 2018 World T20 – a tournament won by Australia for the fourth time.
Only five players have ever taken more wickets in the Women’s Big Bash than Carey’s 75.
