A Lancashire product through and through, Kate Cross became the first woman to play in the Central Lancashire League when she took 3-19 for Heywood against Clifton in 2015.
Later in the same season, she recorded figures of 8 for 47.
Ever since being left out of Mark Robinson’s squad for the 2016 World T20, it has been clear that the hierarchy view Cross more as a longer-format option, despite having represented Brisbane Heat in the inaugural Women’s Big Bash one year previous.
She underwent a minor T20 rejuvenation in 2019, playing in nine T20Is across five different series, taking eight wickets in the process.
They were her first England appearances in the format since 2015.
A cricketer with sport running through her family, her father David won the FA Cup with West Ham in 1980.
She became the first female player to be accepted into Lancashire’s academy in 2006 and was first called up by England in 2011, only to be forced to wait for a debut for a further two years.
With Katherine Brunt and Anya Shrubsole for company, she has played fewer games than she otherwise might have done.
