A talented track and field athlete growing up, Matthews also captained the boys' team at school and had a difficult career decision to make.
Ultimately she chose cricket.
Her father is a former cricketer who taught his daughter the basics from the aged five, it is little wonder she made her Barbados senior team debut at 12 years old.
Her international debut followed four years later, in a T20 series against New Zealand in 2014.
In the ODI series that followed her debut T20, she made 241 across four games, showcasing her attacking yet elegant approach to batting.
Her talent enabled her to be the youngest West Indian ever to hit an ODI century in the Caribbean, striking 117 against South Africa in front of her home crowd in Bridgetown, Barbados.
She has backed up each performance with continued success as her international career grew, being the highest wicket-taker overall out of both sides on the Windies' tour of Sri Lanka in 2015.
In 2016 she was part of the victorious West Indies side that lifted the 2016 T20 World Cup, having turned 18 during the tournament.
She made a crucial contribution of 66 off 45 balls in the final, displaying her fearless batting style against the world champion bowlers of Australia.
In the domestic side, her success has also been clear, taking part in competitions worldwide, in both Australia and the UK.
Her Big Bash experience has been with the Hobart Hurricanes where in the 2016/17 season she had the highest number of wickets, and in 2017/18 having highest number of runs in the sides.
In the Kia Super League she has been a vital part of a number of teams, starting at Lancashire Thunder in 2016, moving to Southern Vipers in 2017 before played for Loughborough Lightening in 2019.
