It is three years since Annabel Sutherland became – then – the youngest player in the history of the Women’s Big Bash, making her debut for Melbourne Renegades as a 15-year-old.
A talented Aussie Rules footballer in her youth and recently the recipient of an offer from the University of Melbourne to study science, the allrounder is the daughter of former Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland.
Her brother, Will, made his first-class debut for Victoria in 2019.
Sutherland impressed with the ball for Australia A during a series against India A and that form played a role in her call-up to Matthew Mott’s national team.
News of her inclusion in the squad brought with it emotional scenes in the Sutherland household.
“When I saw mum, she said it was the first time she’d seen him cry in 54 years, so there you go,” Sutherland said.
“But he’s just really excited and I guess we’re all pretty supportive of each other. We love sport and we just want each other to do well – so they’re all pretty proud.”
