Sarah Taylor’s retirement from international cricket has afforded the 26-year-old her opportunity on a permanent basis
Born: June 13, 1993
Role: Right-hand bat, wicketkeeper
Amy Jones has played for Warwickshire since 2008, which seems almost unbelievable at just 26 years of age.
Yet, the former MCC Young Cricketer has long been viewed as an exceptional talent.
Only, initially she struggled for opportunities, stuck behind Sarah Taylor for the wicketkeeping berth and not then viewed regularly as a viable option with bat alone.
There were some moments: she was part of England’s World T20 squad in 2012 and made her international debut a year later, while she made an unbeaten 155 for England Academy in a warmup match against Australia before an Ashes Test in 2015.
With Taylor now having retired from international cricket, though, England’s wicketkeeper in-waiting is now England’s wicketkeeper in-possession.
Much has been expected of Jones for some time and, when Taylor has previously been absent, the level of her game has often ballooned.
Jones now has the opportunity to stamp on her authority on the global game.
It has long been known that the talent is there.
