Over 340 international games and 14 years on from his debut, Mushfiqur is Bangladesh’s most successful Test captain, their most capped Test player and the holder of their highest ever individual Test score
Born: June 9, 1987
Role: Wicketkeeper, right-hand bat
Only 16 years old and just four months removed from his first-class debut when he was a surprise inclusion in Bangladesh’s squad for their first tour of England in 2005, Mushfiqur Rahim ended up making his Test bow at Lord’s as a specialist batsman despite originally being considered simply Khaled Mashud’s understudy behind the stumps.
Mushfiqur was a gamble backed by chief selector Faruque Ahmed who had been impressed by his runscoring for both Bangladesh A and the under-19s.
A century against Zimbabwe for the A tesm, an 88 for the under-19s at Taunton and a century in a warm-up game against Northamptonshire all persuaded Faruque to back the teenager and it is a call which has turned out to be a massive success.
Over 340 international games and 14 years later, Mushfiqur is Bangladesh’s most successful Test captain, their most capped Test player and the holder of their highest ever individual Test score – a not out 219.
In ODIs, while no longer the captain, Mushfiqur remains a key member of the side.
