Who would bet against this enormously impressive cricketer being one of the stars of the World Cup, looking at his form over the last 18 months?
The level-headed Barbadian hit a breath-taking double-century at his home Bridgetown ground, batting at No.8, to lead West Indies to victory and a stunning Test series win over England last winter.
That performance took him to the top of the Test allrounder rankings. He has also looked in wonderful all-round form for Northamptonshire this summer. What an inspired move signing up for that short county stint could be.
That came on the back of 2018, when he took 33 Test wickets at just 12 apiece. He can be a destructive batsman, combining power with a deft touch, and his long reach and ability to quickly pick up length makes him difficult to bowl at. And although he appears only medium pace, his height – 6ft 7ins – delivers tricky bounce. He also has a cunning slower ball.
Since he was made a rather unlikely ODI captain at 23, and Test skipper a year later, he has loved to prove people wrong.
He captained West Indies in the last World Cup. They won only three out of seven matches, but this time many fancy them to do a bit better, after counting their luck as they sneaked through the qualifying competition, then surprised England in a 2-2 draw that followed the Tests.
He seems to be over the shoulder injury that hindered him last year.
