IPL success pigeonholed me as subcontinent specialist, says Glenn Maxwell

Much of Maxwell’s reputation in the competition stems from 2014, when he smashed 552 runs with a strike rate of 187.75 during Punjab’s run to the final

Glenn Maxwell has recalled how his best years in the Indian Premier League saw him “pigeonholed in Australia” as a player suited to playing in Asian conditions.

The Royal Challengers Bangalore allrounder endured a poor campaign last year for Kings XI Punjab, scoring just 108 runs in 13 innings, but his reputation as an IPL match-winner still meant that he earned a pay rise when RCB eventually secured his signature for 14.25 crores (£1.45million) after a lengthy bidding war with Chennai Super Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals.

Much of Maxwell’s reputation in the competition stems from 2014, when he smashed 552 runs with a strike rate of 187.75 during Punjab’s run to the final.

“I have been a massive beneficiary of the IPL,” he said, reflecting on his time in the tournament to date during an interview broadcast on RCB’s Twitter account.

“It is certainly fast-tracked my international T20 career, I have been able to experience the Indian conditions, we had an IPL in Dubai in 2014 and I was able to perform really well over there.

“After that, I got a bit pigeon-holed in Australia over being a sub-continent specialist. It got me a few ODIs and Test tours which I probably would not have been able to do so if not for the IPL.”

All seven of Maxwell’s Test appearances have come against Asian opposition, playing two Tests in Bangladesh, four in India and one in UAE against Pakistan.
