David Warner is no longer Sunrisers Hyderabad captain

David Warner has stepped down from his role as captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad.

The batsman's decision comes amid the fallout from his involvement in the ball-tampering episode which has rocked Australian cricket.

“In light of recent events, David Warner has stepped down as captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad. The new captain of the team will be announced shortly,” Sunrisers chief executive K Shanmugam said in a statement.

Warner has been sent home from Australia's Test tour of South Africa, along with Steve Smith and Cameron Bancroft, after conceiving a plan to scrub one side of the ball with tape during the third Test against the Proteas in Cape Town.

Warner faces a lengthy Cricket Australia ban

Cricket Australia are set to announce "serious sanctions" against the three players later on Wednesday, with year-long bans being widely reported as a likely punishment.

It is unclear whether in the case of such bans being implemented, Warner and Smith would be able to play for their respective IPL franchises in this year's tournament, which is due to begin on April 7.

Typically, players require no objection certificates from their governing body to take part in the seven-week event.

Smith, who has already lost the Rajasthan Royals captaincy, and Warner are on highly lucrative contracts in the Indian Premier League.

Both players are set to earn more than £1million in the 2018 competition.
