Royal Challengers Bangalore would have been hoping for fast runs in this year's IPL, but not this kind.

The world's fastest man, Usain Bolt, has thrown his weight behind the franchise ahead of the new Indian Premier League season by posing for a social media snap in an RCB replica shirt.

The Jamaican posted the picture on Twitter on Wednesday, two days before RCB begin their campaign against Mumbai Indians in Chennai.

He wrote: "Challengers, just letting you know, I'm still the fastest cat around".

The message appeared to be in relation to a back-and-forth between Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers recently, in which the South African batsman challenged the Indian captain to a race.

Bolt is a huge cricket fan, who once had to choose between the game and athletics.

He said in 2014: "My father is a huge cricket fan, but when I got to higher secondary, I had two options: cricket or athletics."

"My dad said because of the system in Jamaica, it would be better to take up athletics. He said, 'You just have to run fast in athletics while it's tougher to get into the national (cricket) team'."

The 34-year-old has previously visited Bangalore, seven years ago, when he captained a seven-a-side team in a match against an opposition skippered by former Indian World Cup winner Yuvraj Singh.
