Cricket's return to the Commonwealth Games will be among the sports to kick-off the multi-sport event in Birmingham in 2022.

The eight-team women-only competition will be played on eight days between July 28 and August 8.

Matches will begin on the first day of competition on July 29, with the last of the medals determined on August 7.

All games will be staged at Edgbaston, home of Warwickshire. The competition punctuates a year which also includes the previously-postponed 50-over World Cup in New Zealand and the T20 equivalent in South Africa.

It will represent cricket's return to the Commonwealth Games since its only appearance in 1998 in Kuala Lumpur.

On that occasion, the men-only 50-over tournament was contested by 16 sides and won by South Africa.

Seventy-two nations will take part in 20 sports during the 22nd edition of the international multi-sport event.
