Hayley Matthews, Stafanie Taylor and Deandra Dottin will captain the three teams in the inaugural Women's Caribbean Premier League.

Dottin, one of the most destructive allrounders in the history of the women's game, will lead Trinbago Knight Riders, with Matthews heading up Barbados Royals and Taylor at Guyana Amazon Warriors.

The tournament, which is due to begin on August 30, will also feature nine overseas players – three per squad, with the women's competition initially comprising three teams rather than the six that will take part in the men's event.

"I am grateful to all those in CPL and CWI who made it happen, especially the three pioneering franchises who have so willingly got on board," said Ricky Skerritt, president of Cricket West Indies.

The local draft, which has seen 11 players allocated to each team, features several West Indies internationals – including Chinelle Henry, Chedean Nation, Afy Fletcher, Shakera Selman and Anisa Mohammed – among a selection of younger players from across the Caribbean region.

Pete Russell, chief executive of the competition, added: "A Women's CPL is the next logical step as we grow the brand, and we are very pleased that we have been able to make this a reality in 2022.

"We are grateful to CWI, Barbados Royals, Guyana Amazon Warriors and Trinbago Knight Riders for working with us on this ground-breaking tournament and we look forward to showcasing the tremendous skills of all these talented players."

Dr. Bobby Ramroop, Guyana Amazon Warriors' owner, said: "We are hopeful that this newest format will provide a platform for empowering female athletes, as well as highlighting inspiring role models for young girls."

The tournament is set to run alongside the men's edition. Ahead of the final in 2019, Cricket West Indies staged two T10 matches featuring West Indies' leading women's players, adding at the time that they hoped it would represent a precursor to a women's league in the future.
