Western Storm have awarded eight professional contracts ahead of the 2023 domestic season.

England World Cup winner Fran Wilson leads a group of five players to retain their deals.

Captain and last season's leading run-scorer Sophie Luff, Dani Gibson, Nat Wraith and Alex Griffiths also remain on full-time terms.

They are joined by three new addition to the professional ranks.

The trio are led by left-arm spinner Sophia Smale, 17, who was one of the breakout stars during the second edition of the women's Hundred, taking eight wickets for champions Oval Invincibles.

"I'm delighted to have signed my first professional contract at Western Storm," said Smale, who also scored 136 runs and took six wickets across the Charlotte Edwards Cup and Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy.

"It's always been a dream of mine to play professional cricket and I can't believe I now have this opportunity.

"We have a great group of girls here at Storm and I hope that we can continue to do Wales and the West Country proud."

Smale will cap a remarkable rise by representing England in the inaugural Under-19 Women's World Cup in South Africa in January.

Seamer Lauren Filer and batting allrounder Chloe Skelton complete the list after impressing in 50-over cricket.

Meanwhile, Fi Morris and Katie George have departed for Thunder and Central Sparks while Georgia Hennessy, who impressed in the CE Cup, has stepped away from the game.

The news of the fresh deals comes after the England and Wales Cricket Board announced a £3.5 million funding increase for professional women's domestic cricket.

The commitment will see the number of professional women's domestic cricketers climb to 80 in time for the start of the 2023 season.

Storm head coach, Trevor Griffin said: "I'm really excited about this group of players. We have a great blend of youth and experience, and all the players richly deserve their opportunity.

"We want Western Storm to be pushing for silverware, and a big winter lies ahead with the squad to ensure we are ready to challenge in the summer."
