West Indies and England urged to protest in Grenada if substandard pitches continue

After draws in Antigua and Barbados, the series heads for a decider on the Spice Isle, but David Lloyd wants both teams to take extreme measures if conditions are once again benign

West Indies and England should consider protesting if conditions for the series-deciding third Test in Grenada are similar to the rest of the tour.

Both teams head to the Spice Isle at 0-0 after dull stalemates in Antigua and Barbados.

Across both Tests, 2,420 runs have been scored for the loss of 60 wickets, with eight centuries recorded. On just three occasions has a batting team been bowled out.

Kraigg Brathwaite's performance summed up the state of the pitch, which only offered signs of turn in the dying embers of the game. He faced 673 deliveries across both innings, the most by any West Indies player in a Test.

It is hoped there might be more in the pitch for each bowling attack at the National Cricket Stadium in Grenada. But if not, former England player and coach David Lloyd wants to see a reaction.

"Officials in Grenada should do right by the players and make the final Test a contest," he told The Daily Mail.

"England should draft in Matt Parkinson to share duties with Jack Leach, backed up by Dan Lawrence and Joe Root."

"If not both sides should protest. Bowlers should bowl with the wrong hand and batters bat the wrong way around.

"The game would be in disrepute but that is how farcical this week has been."

He added: "I don't know who presides over the preparation of these pitches but this is the second in recent weeks to have proved inadequate.

"Like this one, the Rawalpindi pitch for the opening Test between Pakistan and Australia was as dead as a door nail.

"Who likes this sort of cricket?

"Broadcasters don’t, players don’t, supporters don’t. I’ve had half a dozen people contact me to tell me they’re not watching."

Of the 29 wickets England have managed to extract, 13 have fallen to spin - with Jack Leach and Dan Lawrence taking 11 and two respectively.

If the quick bowlers are again to be nullified, handing Matt Parkinson a Test debut could be among the options considered by Joe Root.

The Lancashire leggie has been a constant on England tours for the last two years but is yet to break into the XI.

"If there is so little to work with for the seamers in Grenada, the selectors on both sides might as well just opt for spinners," stated Lloyd, who spent his entire county career at Lancashire.

"England should draft in Matt Parkinson to share duties with Jack Leach, backed up by Dan Lawrence and Joe Root.

"And they should recall Ollie Robinson too. He bowled a few offies in the Ashes, didn’t he?"
