Marcus Trescothick has admitted England wilted under pressure in Grenada but insists the team has "made strides" during the Caribbean tour and shouldn't be judged on "one bad day".

Trescothick, England's interim batting coach, accepted the tour party were "immensely disappointed" with a day which may well have defined their tour. But he also suggested it was the only poor day, even one which ended with the team confronting the prospect of another series defeat, England had endured on the tour and the team were "better than that over the course of the series".

"We're obviously immensely disappointed about what's happened over the course of the day," Trescothick said. "We've not got it right in both departments. We've had a really bad day and we're really disappointed. It's all gone wrong.

"But we've been better than that over the course of the series. We've had one bad day and, over the course of the series, this is the first bad day we've had.

"Yet we believe, as coaching staff and players in that dressing room, that we've made strides as a team over the course of the Test matches we've had. We've been better than that over the course of the series.

"We had a challenging day at the start of the Antigua Test, but we fought back really well. Then, in Barbados, we were really strong and controlled most of the game.

"But today it's gone wrong. It's one bad day among 12 other days."

Asked whether it was a concern that England appeared to flinch from the heat of battle when the series was at its most tense, Trescothick admitted that it was an area England had "to address".

"Everyone will regret what happened today because we haven't been good enough as a team"

"That's something for us to address for sure," Trescothick said. "We didn't stand up on the pressure moments when it was going down to the wire. We haven't stood up and performed as we have in the rest of the series, whereas they've had a couple of guys really step up and make a difference. Kyle Mayers bowled brilliantly and got something out of the pitch, while Joshua Da Silva batted well for a hundred.

"We need to try and put in those performances when these times come around."

Trescothick also defended the record of England's Test captain, Joe Root, who is likely to come under pressure as the side face the prospect of a fifth successive series without victory.

"Everyone will regret what happened today because we haven't been good enough as a team," Trescothick said. "I don't think you can pinpoint the captain and say it's his fault. I think it's the group.

"We haven't performed to the level we've put our standards at in the previous two Tests. So we have to look at that and say 'why have we put in that performance today? What is the reason?'

"We'll try to find a solution and try to make it better going forward. We're working at those solutions. I think we've made improvements but it was disappointing today."

Josh de Silva, meanwhile, admitted he had cried "tears of joy" after recording his maiden Test century to give West Indies a significant advantage in the match.

"I have no words," he said. "I still remember making 92 in Bangladesh and walking off crying. So it was a good thing that this time it was tears of joy and not tears of failure again."
