Former West Indies stars Brian Lara and Ramnaresh Sarwan are set to join their former team’s camp ahead of the first Test against India.
The two ex-batsmen have been brought in to share their knowledge and experiences with Jason Holder’s side ahead of the game at Antigua, as well as working with a young batting lineup that includes John Campbell, Shimron Hetmyer and Shai Hope.
It is the first of two Tests – the second will take at Sabina Park in Kingston, Jamaica, from August 30 to September 3.
Sarwan captained the West Indies four times in his 87-Test career, scoring 5,842 runs at an average of 40.01. Lara, meanwhile, is widely regarded as one of the greatest players of any era.
The thrilling left-hander score 34 Test centuries and still holds the record for the highest individual score – the unbeaten 400 he struck against England in 2004. He remains the highest run-scorer in the history of West Indian cricket, having made 11,953 runs in 131 Tests.
Jimmy Adams, Cricket West Indies’ director of cricket, said: “We have some good young batsmen in the team who we believe will form the future of West Indies cricket.
“We saw some very good signs of development earlier this year in the Test matches when we played so very well to beat England and we want to see them grow and become outstanding players for the West Indies.
“We have taken the step to have Brian and ‘Ronnie’ work with these players, who have demonstrated a will to learn and succeed. We know they still have the passion and love for West Indies cricket and are eager to assist and share their information with the present generation.”
