Amy Jones to be Heather Knight's vice-captain in West Indies

Jones captained England Women during the latter part of the summer, when both Knight and Nat Sciver were absent

Amy Jones will be Heather Knight's vice-captain in the Caribbean after Nat Sciver opted not to reclaim the role for the West Indies tour as she eases back into international cricket following her mental health break.

The allrounder hasn't played for England since captaining in the Commonwealth Games. She then took part in The Hundred for Trent Rockets but pulled out of the summer-ending series against India to focus on her mental health and wellbeing.

In Sciver's absence, and with Heather Knight also injured for the second half of the English summer, Jones took over as stand-in skipper, winning a T20I series but also suffering an ODI whitewash against the same opposition with an inexperienced line-up.

It is understood that Jones' appointment is not a permanent role. Speaking to The Cricketer as part of a wider interview, England Women's director of cricket Jonathan Finch insisted that Sciver taking on such roles again remains "a possibility".

"Our main thing with any player is to ensure that when they're in the England environment, they're comfortable and they enjoy doing what they do," said Finch.

"If Nat is keen to go back into a leadership position after West Indies, we will ensure that we can make that happen. But it has to be right for her.

"We back her 100 per cent in doing that; she's very well respected in the group, but we don't rush people coming back in, and we're not going to take things off the table because that would be disrespectful to her. But that is a possibility, for sure."

Ahead of the first ODI, which takes place on Sunday, Knight also confirmed that Lauren Winfield-Hill – back in the fold for the first time since the World Cup finished in April – has been picked to tour as a back-up wicketkeeper to Jones. Winfield-Hill lost her central contract in the tranche of deals recently announced but enjoyed a terrific year across formats. Jones, meanwhile, has been short on runs for England for some time.

The three-match ODI series is followed by five T20Is as England put finishing touches to their preparations for the T20 World Cup in February. The trip is also a first assignment for Jon Lewis, who has replaced Lisa Keightley as head coach.

"He's been very relaxed, very positive, very clear on how he wants to go about things," said Knight. "We both agree on the direction of travel that we want the team to go in.

"Jon sees us being super-positive and a little bit more aggressive in how we approach things, just seeing how far we can take things, how far we can push it.

"It feels like we've got a really nice balance of youth and experience and a really good mix of a team that can start to really push the game forward and play an exciting form of cricket, one that is inspirational and people want to watch."
