Perth Scorchers’ WBBL title defence has been handed a significant boost following Marizanne Kapp’ decision to return to the club.

The South Africa allrounder won the player of the match award in the 2021/22 final, scoring 31 not out from 23 balls and taking 1 for 25.

She finished the tournament with 106 runs and 12 wickets, and now has 935 runs at a strike rate of 101.85 and 102 wickets in her WBBL career to date. She is one of only five players to take more than 100 wicket in the competition, doing so while maintaining an economy of 5.3, and is the only overseas player on the list.

A South Africa international, Kapp has made 84 T20I appearance for her country, scoring 1,046 runs and taking 66 wickets.

She is the Scorchers’ third overseas signing for WBBL08, joining New Zealand duo Sophie Devine and Maddy Green

Commenting on re-joining the club, Kapp said: "I’m thrilled to sign on for another season with Perth. Winning the title last year in front of the Orange Army was an awesome experience, and something the whole group is incredibly driven to repeat.

"There’s a great blend of youth and experience within the squad, we’ve got an excellent coach in Shelley, and the culture we’ve built together is really strong. I can’t wait to see what we’re able to achieve moving forward."

Perth Scorchers head coach, Shelley Nitschke, added: “We’re stoked to have Kappie back. She’s one of the best allrounders in the world and she keeps getting better and better, particularly with her batting.

"She has been around for a while and is incredibly diligent with her preparation, making her such a good role model for those younger players coming through. It’s certainly exciting to have her on our team."
