Michael Burgess has signed a two-year contract extension with Warwickshire to keep him at Edgbaston until at least the end of the 2023 season.

The wicketkeeper-batter joined the Bears on loan in 2019 before making the move permanent later that year, replacing the retiring Tim Ambrose behind the stumps in all formats.

Burgess scored his first County Championship century for Warwickshire last month, hitting 101 in his side’s draw with Worcestershire, and has taken 63 catches and made seven stumpings in first-class and T20 cricket since joining the club,

Commenting on his contract extension, the 26-year-old said: "Making the move to Warwickshire has proven to be a fantastic career choice for me and I'm very proud be able to continue calling this my home for at least the next two years

"There was a huge amount of excitement coming into this season and our performances in the Championship and Blast show that we're making really good progress. I think we could be on the verge of something with the Bears and I'm really looking forward to the challenge ahead."

Meanwhile, Warwickshire's director of cricket, Paul Farbrace, added: "With the gloves and bat, Michael has come a long way this season and we’re all delighted to see him extend his time with us for at least another two seasons.

"He's looked like one of the best glovemen on the county circuit this summer and is now living up to his potential of making game-changing contributions with the bat, particularly in red-ball cricket with his century versus Worcestershire and first innings 71 in the recent victory over Derbyshire.

"Michael is also an excellent character and a popular member within the dressing who has the opportunity to have a long career here with Warwickshire."
