The Hundred team of the week: Jemimah Rodrigues and Jonny Bairstow lead the way... but who else makes the cut?

The Cricketer picks a standout XI from the first week of The Hundred, with seven women and four men catching the eye of our selectors over the past seven days

Alice Capsey (Oval Invincibles)

At 16 years old, Capsey strolled into Lord’s and owned the place. The Invincibles opener combined elegance and innovation in making a 34-ball half-century. She’s not even sat her A Levels. A brilliant young talent, particularly playing in to out over extra cover.

Jonny Bairstow (Welsh Fire)

The Hundred will be considerably poorer for Bairstow being called up to carry the drinks for England against India. Back-to-back half-centuries - first at his home ground of Headingley against Northern Superchargers and then at his very temporary ‘home’ in Cardiff against Southern Brave - have helped Fire to a fast start. Has England ever produced such a powerful white-ball batsman?

Dane van Niekerk (Oval Invincibles)

The Invincibles captain has had an excellent start to the tournament on a personal level, with 85 runs at a strike rate of 110 and three wickets to boot. Her performance in Oval’s chase against Manchester Originals on opening night was a tour de force that set the tone for the women’s competition, and her Invincibles side have a 100 per cent record so far.

Jonny Bairstow has been impressive for Welsh Fire

Jemimah Rodrigues (Northern Superchargers)

The standout player of the tournament to date, Indian batsman Rodrigues has two half-centuries from two outings, including the competition’s leading individual score of 92 not out against Welsh Fire. She already has 152 runs at a strike rate above 180, and no one - just no one - seems to be able to contain her.

Harry Brook (Northern Superchargers)

One of three batters to have made 100-plus runs in the competition so far, Brook has shown just why he is so highly rated at Yorkshire. A counter-punching 62 nearly saw his side home against Welsh Fire, before he shone in another defeat - this time at Trent Rockets - with 38 from 30 balls.

Harmanpreet Kaur (Manchester Originals)

Few batters in this competition are more pleasing to watch than Kaur in full flow. While Originals have not hit top gear just yet, the Indian international has been busy making good runs - 78 at 123 strike rate.

Anya Shrubsole (Southern Brave)

A formidable opening performance at Trent Rockets brought 40 not out with the bat and three wickets with the ball. After two matches, the England allrounder’s economy rate of 82.25 is bettered only by four other women in the competition. And she has proved an effective captain, too, with Brave winning each of their first two games.

Lauren Bell makes our team of the week

Tash Farrant (Oval Invincibles)

Farrant has led from the front for Oval in their excellent start to the tournament. The seamer has five wickets and 20 dot balls - only three women have more so far in this year’s Hundred.

Matt Parkinson (Manchester Originals)

It has been a competition for the spinners so far, and Parkinson has been one of the very best. The Lancashire leggie has five wickets at an average of 7.2 and an economy of just 92.3. He’s also produced one of the deliveries of the tournament, a savage leg break that ripped from outside leg stump to hit off to dismiss Chris Cooke of Birmingham Phoenix.

Marchant de Lange (Trent Rockets)

The standout seamer across the tournament, De Lange has used searing pace and deadly accuracy to claim eight wickets in two matches. Tipping 90mph on a regular basis, he is claiming a wicket every 4.25 balls on average at an economy rate of 123.52.

Lauren Bell (Southern Brave)

The 20-year-old is attracting plenty of attention with her dangerous induckers. Bell has four wickets from her 40 deliveries and the names she has dismissed are impressive - Sammy-Jo Johnson, Nat Sciver, Hayley Matthews and Sarah Taylor.
