Southern Brave: Men's Hundred player retention analysis

NICK HOWSON takes a look at Brave's player recruitment and suggests what more needs to be done before the start of the new season

Who has been retained?

Much of the squad who led them to the title last summer remain, including Chris Jordan who reportedly turned down offers from elsewhere.

Marcus Stoinis didn't feature last term but was an automatic candidate to be retained given he can bat anywhere in the order and is good for a couple of overs.

Tim David has been one of the stars of franchise cricket over the past 12 months and is probably the snip of the competition at £50,000, having featured just twice last term.

Craig Overton of Somerset is probably the most fortunate to stay on given he only played three times and isn't regarded as a particularly threatening white-ball quick.

Who has been released?

Virtually all of the bit-part figures have been allowed to leave, including Liam Dawson and Danny Briggs.

Devon Conway, who missed much of the campaign with injury, and Delray Rawlins, who played once, have also been offloaded and might be lucky to be picked up again.

Quinton de Kock, who scored 202 runs and claimed 12 dismissals in nine games is the highest-profile exit.

What will be the main focus of the draft?

Despite having the last draft pick there is hope that De Kock will still be among those available to fill the void at the top of the order.

Alex Davies is the likely candidate to take the gloves and open, but it is clear where the Brave's focus will be.

Elsewhere, bringing in some backup spinners, including some more left-arm options - perhaps some of last season's contingent on reduced terms - will be the priority.

Most of the gaps come in the lower bands, with two available in the £30,000 bracket.
