Former England international Mark Alleyne has been added to the Welsh Fire coaching team for The Hundred.

Alleyne, who is currently coaching at Marlborough College and last year was a part of the Gloucestershire backroom staff, will work beneath head coach Gary Kirsten at the club during the tournament in August and September.

The 54-year-old joins a coaching group that also includes Somerset head coach Jason Kerr and Glamorgan head coach Matthew Maynard.

His hire follows a stint with the England men's side in the Caribbean during the T20I series against West Indies in January.

Alleyne was linked with the white-ball head coach role following the dismissal of Chris Silverwood.

He said of his upcoming stint with Welsh Fire: "It's exciting to be able to work closely with elite players and hopefully I can use my experience to add extra value to what they do and help create a winning formula for Welsh Fire.

"I loved watching The Hundred last year and it’s exciting to get involved in a competition that captured the imagination of fans and brought new audiences to cricket."

Fire, who have Jonny Bairstow, Joe Clarke and Adam Zampa among their ranks, are looking to improve on a miserable first season of The Hundred, when they finished rock bottom of the eight-team group stage.

The club is due to begin its season in the men's competition against champions Southern Brave at the Ageas Bowl on August 3.
