Fixture: Sussex Sharks v Surrey
Venue: 1st Central County Ground, Hove
Date: Sunday, June 27, 2021
Start time: 2.30pm
What’s the lowdown?
Sussex were unbeaten after six Blast matches, winning three (Gloucestershire, Hampshire, and Essex) and losing three matches to the weather. However, they were brought back down to earth with a bump in their seventh match, with Glenn Phillips hitting an unbeaten 94 for the second game in a row to see his Gloucestershire side to a 27-run win. Sussex are currently fourth in the South Group, one point ahead of fifth-placed Somerset.
Surrey, meanwhile, ended their two-game losing streak with victory over Middlesex on Friday. The London-based side were faltering on 115 for 5 with 33 balls remaining before Ollie Pope (50 not out) and Jamie Overton (24 not out) combined to drag them to a five-wicket win with an over to spare. Surrey are one place and one point ahead of Sussex.
When these two sides met earlier in the season, Surrey were 53 for 2 after five overs before rain stopped play.
Who’s in form?
Luke Wright is in good touch with the bat for Sussex, scoring 108 runs - including 75 off just 44 balls against Essex Eagles - in two appearances. Phil Salt remains the Sharks' leading run-scorer, with 173 runs and two half-centuries. Meanwhile, Tymal Mills starred with the ball against Gloucestershire, taking 3 for 20 from his four overs. Mills now has six wickets in four appearances and an economy of eight.
For Surrey, Ollie Pope looked solid in his first Blast outing of the season, scoring a match-winning half-century off 35 balls. Overton, too, impressed with his explosive 10-ball 24. However, Surrey's standout batsman this season has been Will Jacks, who has scored a team-leading 241 runs at a strike rate of 185.38.
With the ball, Dan Moriarty is tied with the absent Sam Curran at the top of the wicket-taking standings, with six to his name. Against Middlesex, Gus Atkinson took an important, if slightly expensive, 4 for 36, while Kyle Jamieson posted figures of 0 for 26 from his three overs. Expect to see more of the big New Zealander in the next few matches.
