Jamie Overton joins Surrey on loan ahead of permanent move

He will now be available for Surrey’s remaining T20 Blast matches and their last Bob Willis Trophy fixture against Sussex

Jamie Overton will join Surrey on loan for the remainder of the season, having already agreed a permanent contract with the club.

It had initially been thought that the seamer would remain with Somerset until the end of the current campaign, but instead he will now be available for Surrey’s remaining T20 Blast matches and their last Bob Willis Trophy fixture against Sussex.

Overton follows Worcestershire’s Adam Finch, Middlesex youngster Blake Cullen and batsman Laurie Evans in signing a loan deal with Surrey this season.

While Finch and Cullen arrived on short-term deals to allay an injury crisis at the Kia Oval county, Evans – like Overton – has agreed a long-term contract with Alec Stewart’s side.

The 26-year-old, whose brother Craig signed a new contract at Somerset around the same time as news of Jamie’s departure was initially announced, has enjoyed a fine shortened season.

He spent time in England’s bio-secure bubble ahead of the first Test of the summer, before taking a five-wicket haul against Glamorgan and hitting a maiden first-class century against Warwickshire to help Somerset into a dominant position in their Bob Willis Trophy group.

Somerset director of cricket Andy Hurry explained: “Jamie has requested an immediate loan move after recently agreeing a contract with Surrey CCC for next season and beyond and we have agreed to this request.

“I want to take this opportunity to thank Jamie for all his contributions and commitment to the Club over the last ten years and we wish him well in the next chapter of his career.”

Surrey director of cricket Alec Stewart added: “I’d like to personally thank Andy Hurry and Somerset for their understanding in allowing Jamie to join us on loan with immediate effect and I’m looking forward to seeing Jamie play and perform in a Surrey shirt.”

His arrival will also help to ease injury concerns that have left Surrey depleted since the season began on August 1.

T20 captain Jade Dernbach is still missing with a groin injury, while Jordan Clark, Ryan Patel and Rikki Clarke are also absent.

Seamers Nick Kimber and Liam Plunkett are also injured, while Morne Morkel's season was ended after hurting his ankle in a pre-match fielding session ahead of the Bob Willis Trophy clash with Kent.

Ollie Pope could miss four months after dislocating his shoulder while in Test action for England, while Sam Curran, Tom Curran and Jason Roy remain on international duty. Roy is also nursing a side strain.
