Young batsman Lewis Goldsworthy has signed a two-year deal with Somerset that will see him join the club’s playing staff.
The 18-year-old, who has impressed while playing for the county’s second team this season, struck 178 for the club’s Under-17 side against Surrey last year.
He follows fellow youngster Kasey Aldridge in signing on at Somerset.
Like Aldridge, Goldsworthy, who also bowls left-arm spin, has represented England at Under-19 level this year.
Somerset director of cricket Andy Hurry said of Goldsworthy’s deal: “Lewis is a player of undoubted potential.
“He transitioned seamlessly from academy level to the second XI, where he impressed on a number of occasions. His performances for the England Under 19s this summer against extremely strong opposition were also of the highest order.
“We are excited about working with Lewis over the next two years as he begins his journey into professional cricket.”
Goldsworthy added: “It’s an unreal feeling to have signed for the club that I’ve grown up watching and supporting. I was speechless when I was offered the contract by Andy Hurry.
“The crowds in Taunton are unbelievable and the club is well known for the support that it gets, so it would mean the world to me to make my debut for the first team. Hopefully that will come around soon.
“Coming from Cornwall means that there’s been a lot of traveling, and a lot of people have put in a lot of effort and commitment to help me get to this stage so a big thank you has to go to them.
“Becoming a professional cricketer is something that I’ve wanted all my life, so hopefully I can make the most of this opportunity.”
