England's allrounder turned a pre-empted stroke into something truly innovative, but ultimately ineffective, during the third ODI against South Africa in Kimberley
Innovation is a big part of cricket, but we can't see this shot having much of a future in the game.
Moeen Ali pulled out the rarely seen one-handed swat during England's one-day international against South Africa in Kimberley. And it's fair to say he won't be taking it out of his bag again any time soon.
The England allrounder set himself up to switch-hit Tabraiz Shamsi during his side's late charge with the bat on Wednesday, but when he realised the ball was darting well wide he loosened one hand from his grip to extend his reach.
The result was a peculiar sight: part top-spin return, part grumpy uncle shooing wasps away from a picnic. No contact was made.
Moeen went back to more familiar methods of run-scoring from then on in, hitting 41 from 23 balls as England made 346 for 7.
