Fixture: Northern Diamonds v Sunrisers
Venue: Roseworth Terrace, Gosforth
Dates: Wednesday, August 25, 2021
Start time: 2.30pm
What's the lowdown?
Group B is currently wide open with just five points separating first-placed Thunder from fourth-placed Sunrisers.
Sunrisers got their Charlotte Edwards Cup campaign off to a fine start, defeating Western Storm by seven wickets to pick up their first ever win as a team. However, they were brought back down to earth with a bump by Northern Diamonds who chased down their target of 117 inside 17 overs to seal an eight-wicket win. In their final match before The Hundred, Sunrisers were put to the sword by Emma Lamb at Old Trafford as Thunder smashed their way to 186 for 1. In reply, Sunrisers were bowled out for 115 off the final ball of the match, Cordelia Griffith top-scoring on 34.
Northern Diamonds are second in the Group B standings with two wins and one defeat to their name. After failing to chase down 119 against Thunder in their opening match, Diamonds recovered with back-to-back victories against Sunrisers and Western Storm. However, they are yet to look their best in the T20s, most recently limping to a one-wicket victory off the final ball of the game while chasing 107 to win against Storm.
Who should I watch out for?
Jenny Gunn is proving hard to keep out of the headlines for Diamonds this season, topping their wicket-taking charts with five and also chipping in with 33 runs. Most recently, she stood firm as Diamonds threatened to throw away victory against Storm, scoring 27 runs from 21 balls and hitting the final delivery for four to see her side over the line.
At the opposite end of the age range to Gunn is 19-year-old batter, Leah Dobson, who made her senior debut this year. She is Diamonds' leading T20 run-scorer with 64 runs to her name, including a high-score of 44. Wicketkeeper Bess Heath should also return to the Diamonds' XI after missing the first half of the season through injury. Both youngsters are very promising batters.
For Sunrisers, Grace Scrivens is one to keep an eye on. The allrounder has two wickets, a team-leading economy of 5.45, and 41 runs to her name in three appearances, and showcased her potential in her side's maiden victory over Western Storm. Scrivens finished with figures of 1 for 16 from her four overs before scoring a match-winning 34 not out from 35 balls.
Jo Gardner has also looked promising with the bat this season, scoring 42 runs off 30 balls in her one innings to date while Sonali Patel has taken two wickets, placing her joint-first with Scrivens.
What's the team news?
Sunrisers: Sunrisers are without Mady Villiers and Fran Wilson who have been included in England's squad to face New Zealand. Amara Carr is also absent after suffering a season-ending injury to her finger while representing London Spirit in The Hundred.
Sunrisers squad: Kelly Castle, Kate Coppack, Naomi Dattani, Jo Gardner, Gayatri Gole, Cordelia Griffith, Katie Midwood, Florence Miller, Mia Rodgers, Grace Scrivens, Katherine Speed, Katie Wolfe, Emily Woodhouse
