And so, as it stands, the Pakistan Super League survives. While the rest of the cricketing calendar, and indeed world of sport as a whole, is decimated by the Covid-19 outbreak, the PSL marches on.

While the tournament has been revised in a response to the continue threat posed by the coronavirus - the competition has been reduced by one match to 33 and will end four days earlier than originally stated - it looks set to reach a conclusion.

Multan Sultans in particular will be thrilled to see the tournament through to its completion.

Having secured a semi-final place for the first time in their history - Multan head into their final group fixture, against Lahore Qalandars, with the luxury of being able to rest players if required.

Pakistan Super League to continue but 14 players withdraw in light of Covid-19 pandemic

An enthralling three-run win over Peshawar Zalmi behind closed doors at Karachi on Friday confirmed the Sultans would finish as table-toppers with a game to spare.

Eyes will be on 23-year-old Ali Shafiq who made his first appearance of the campaign in that defeat of Peshawar. Shafiq returned figures of 2 for 31 from his four overs, including two wickets - giving up just two runs - in his penultimate set.

While Sultans' path to the final four is secure, two spots are still up for grabs with three teams still in contention. Karachi Kings secured their semi-final place with a four-wicket win over Islamabad United on Saturday - a result that sees Islamabad’s campaign brought to an end.

For Lahore, the equation is simple. Defeat Multan and a semi-final place is obtained. If they lose, then the Qalandars will have to rely on the Kings defeating Quetta Gladiators in Karachi on Sunday.
