GEORGE DOBELL: Harrison was brought in by the ECB at the start of 2015 to secure a new broadcast deal. Money was, pretty much, all the ECB valued. So money was, pretty much, all they got

Damned with faint praise. And rightly so.

Credit and debit columns. Yup he brought in cash but spent all of the ECB reserves on the 100 and generally left the counties and England in a mess. The fixture list being another.

Can't find a good word to say about the effect Harrison and his partner in crime Graves have had on the game. It's what happens when you let business ethics dominate a sport. If you have an idea, a pet project, just market it as 'the future' and eventually people will see no further than the end of their nose. Advertising does it all the time. Bright coloured clothing, plenty of noise and big hitting promotion and you have the execrable 'Hundred', an ego trip for the philistines, reducing a sporting battle to a mere skirmish. With all the bright shiny young things appointed by the ECB, none with apparently any qualifications for the job or ideas in their head other than to take the game on in that direction, Harrison will be rubbing hands that his ideas have taken root, if you'll pardon the pun. The players seem up for it so let's party on down and make cricket part of the formulaic expression of mediocrity that entertainment has become, led by the gods of the boardroom.

Many thanks to George Dobell for an article that clearly addresses most of the problems at the ECB Now I would be interested in his views on the solution In my view they have not approached the future in the right way and are just, in medical terms , using a sticking plaster to sort out a deep wound. Start at the top and replace the current board and introduce people with real expertise and experience in the business of cricket and make them accountable for the success of the organisation both on and off the field Will it happen - I doubt it and we will probably be talking about the same problems in another 5 years George Dobell has the undoubted knowledge and ability to put pen to paper and lead a campaign to make it happen for the benefit of cricket - hope he will !
