Joe Root was a decent, honourable captain whose reign never delivered on its promises

GEORGE DOBELL: There was always talk of his team learning and the promise of jam tomorrow. But, after one victory in 17 Tests and five winless series in succession, the words sounded hollow

Whose batters rarely performed at test level, and as and when the bowlers were sort of fully fit. JR and anyone else would have struggled to captain this inconsistent group of players. That is the reality. Not a Joe Root issue at all. Agree with Marc Evans' comment.

Enjoyed the article about Joe Root with one or two reservations I don't think that Stokes is the right man to replace him In my view there is only one man who could return England to the top of Test cricket as captain and that is Moeen Ali . Yes he has retired from test cricket but I am convince that he would be prepared to return as Captain . He has no agendas and is not in anybody's pocket ! Plus it would mean we have a great no 6 and a world class spinner Mind you I bet nobody has approached him yet Regarding the other positions Wasim Khan is an obvious CEO and Andy Flower would be great M/D of cricket . Then we should leave it to those three to select the coach Chances of all that happening is probably nil with a Board of Directors who are not fit for purpose - sorry but its true !!

Sorry for Root in that he's had to preside over a particularly weak batting line up with dodgy back up from coaches and selectors. Considering this and his inexperience he's done ok, but we're clearly not moving forward now and need some new blood. Not sure who his successor should be but Rob Key as the latest ECB puppet doesn't bode well for the sea change required. With the likes of Hussein and Atherton overlooked again whoever succeeds Root will have the same problems of white ball philosophy overload.
