Andrew Strauss is perfectly placed to lead English cricket review - but Tom Harrison's continued presence provides a warning

GEORGE DOBELL: The next new era only has a realistic chance of success if the change of faces matches the change of structures. English cricket has to do more than rearrange the faces and give them all another name

I am sorry but Harrison has to go. He is past his sell by date and has nothing new or positive to offer the game. I don't envy the replacement. At least Graves the other disaster for the game went. Unfortunately his replacement was well meaning but not a cricket man with no deep understanding of the game.

The domestic red ball game has struggled to pay its way long before the white ball formats took centre stage. There has to be a recognition that more people want to watch the 50 and 20 over (and 100 ball) games and that these formats have the potential to bring in a broader section of society. Getting crowds to 4 day domestic cricket is a tough ask. It is also a comforting tale to blame the test woes on the challenges in domestic first class cricket, but India - who play very little demostic red ball cricket - have arguably the best test team in the world. So that isn't automatically the problem.

There needs to be a long term plan to balance the formats. The persuit of the cash cow by marketing men only interested in pushing their own amateurish gimmicks has got us into this mess. Get cricketing people back into positions of responsibility. Only that way can the interests of the game be protected.

Great post. Harrison's position, after everything that's gone on during his watch, looks questionable, at the very least, unless you're tom Harrison, obviously. And as for English cricket solutions: It's easy to do 'something' to try and fix perceived issues, but you need the right people asking the right questions, with the ability to suggest realistic solutions that are actually going to be acted upon, even though they may be uncomfortable for some in the game. It will be a sad day when the first of the 18 current counties has to pull down the shutters on being first class, but surely there's too many pulling from a limited pot of cash, talent, etc.
