New Zealand seamer Matt Henry faces six weeks out of action and will likely miss the start of the international summer after breaking his thumb.

Henry sustained the injury in practice with his Plunket Shield side Canterbury, when he was struck on the hand while batting in the nets.

He is a major doubt for the T20I series against West Indies, which is due to begin on November 27.

"Matt was unfortunately struck on the tip of the right thumb while batting in the nets," Canterbury physio Tim Dovbysh said. "Matt got an X-ray [done] immediately after training which confirmed the fracture."

Henry is the second injury concern for New Zealand, with captain Kane Williamson currently recovering from an adductor problem picked up while on IPL duty with Sunrisers Hyderabad.
