Tom Smith has signed a new deal with Gloucestershire that will see him remain with the county until the end of the 2021 season.
The 32-year-old played a key role in a successful 2019 campaign as the club returned to Division One of the County Championship for the first time since 2004, while also reaching the quarter-finals of the T20 Blast.
Smith took four wickets in five red-ball matches but also excelled after being pushed up the order with the bat.
During the Cheltenham Cricket Festival, he batted at number four, making a 220-ball 83 during one game against Worcestershire. He added a 230-ball 84 against Leicestershire, ending the campaign with an average of 32.62 as Gloucestershire took the third promotion spot.
In the Blast, his primary purpose remained with the ball; he took eight wickets in 13 games, conceding his runs at just 7.80 runs per over as his side narrowly missed out on a Finals Day place.
Smith said of his contract extension: “With our promotion to Division One and another strong white ball campaign, it is a really exciting time for this group of players. I can’t wait to contribute to the next two seasons.
“It has been a very tough couple of years off the field for me personally, and I can’t thank Gloucestershire CCC enough for all the support they have given me and my family.”
Gloucestershire head coach Richard Dawson added: “Everyone at the club is delighted that Tom has extended his contract. He played a huge part in the promotion push, especially the two weeks at Cheltenham, and had a very good season in both white ball competitions.
“He continues to be a role model for the youngsters coming into the club and a senior figure in the changing room and I’m looking forward to him continuing to add to the club on and off the field.”
