Southern Brave continued to flex their bowling muscle this afternoon after skittling out the Oval Invincibles for just 85.

Having been put into bat first, Sophia Dunkley was the only real standout player for the Brave with the bat, recording a half-century as a slow wicket returned just 115 runs.

In response, the Oval Invincibles collapsed, due in part to phenomenal bowling by Amanda-Jade Wellington, who recorded tournament best figures of 4-12. Lauren Bell also took three of her own as they were bowled out some 30 runs short of the required total.

Here's how it happened..

Ball 4: Shot! Danni Wyatt is off the mark. Marizanne Kapp floats one in on the off stump, and Wyatt shuffles out of her crease before smacking it beautifully through the on-side. 5-0

Ball 9: Pulled away for four! Gaby Lewis has her first boundary. Shabnim Ismail goes on a shorter length, and Lewis waits for it before cracking it through midwicket with the bounce. 10-0

Ball 10: Not out on review! Well, this is a bizarre couple of minutes. Ismail floats it in fuller, and as Lewis looks to fire through point, it strikes her on the pad. The umpire is not interested and it’s sent upstairs. We don’t go to ball-tracking as there is actually a spike on ultra-edge: but Lewis, who thought she was a goner, was three-quarters of the way to the pavilion! She turns back with a pleasant surprise on her face and we go again. 10-0

Ball 17: Same again from Lewis! Just like eight balls ago, Ismail goes on a shorter length, angling in to leg, allowing Lewis to bend her knees and middle the pull shot through square. 17-0

Ball 23: Straight to mid-off, taken! A cheap dismissal, and Lewis is visibly disappointed. Tash Farrant slows it down this time and Lewis finds herself caught in two minds. She tries to step back and create some space for herself, but she ends up just getting enough under it to fire it straight to Gibbs on the ring. 18-1

Ball 37: Smash! That’s six! Excellent stroke from Dani Wyatt. Dane van Niekerk changes up her line, going wider this time, but Wyatt is happy to saunter out of her crease, shuffling across to get enough under it to bludgeon it down to long-off. 31-1

Ball 45: In the air… gone! Wyatt goes, and this has been a real dry spell for the Brave. Alice Capsey strikes again - changing her pace, the slower one tempts Wyatt into looking to fire over the bowler’s head, which she does manage, but there’s nowhere near enough pace on the ball and it sinks right to Gardner who waits on the boundary rope. 38-2

Ball 60: The full toss is dispatched for four! Sophia Dunkley cracks it through covers. Mady Villiers wanted to go full, on the pads, but the release is mistimed, putting it at a perfect height for Dunkley, who makes no mistake to open up the angle and crunch the shot. 54-2

Balls 74 and 75: Two excellent fours from Dunkley! The second near uncanny to the first - both on the sweep, attacking the length deliveries from Mady Villiers, both times she shuffles across and fires with accuracy to pierce the midwicket fielders. 73-2

Ball 76: In the air and down! Frustration for Gardner. Dane van Niekerk tosses it up on middle, and Dunkley shuffles back and looks to fire to long-on. It’s just short of pace and Gardner, who moved a fair distance across, couldn’t hold on. 74-2

Ball 79: Down again from Gardner. Ouch. She can’t believe it, as this time it’s a carbon copy of the previous effort, but it’s Stefanie Taylor who lobs it to long-on - and it’s in and just right out again. 76-2

Ball 80: Misfield and four! This has been a rough set for the Invincibles. Dunkley steps out to meet van Niekerk and fires through midwicket, where Grace Gibbs prepares to field, and at a nice pace it runs right through the gate and over the rope. 79-2

Ball 93: Cracked over midwicket! Taylor waits for the slower one from Shabnim Ismail before leaning back and timing it perfectly, over the rope and bouncing for four. 102-2

Ball 96: That’s a clever six, and Dunkley has 50! It’s been a slow innings for the Brave, but some excellent batting means she deserves the raise the bat. Tash Farrant goes short, offering the bait, but Dunkley doesn’t rush, waiting before turning the shoulder and launching over fine leg. 108-6

Ball 99: Up to long-on and taken! Stefanie Taylor goes on the second last ball. Tash Farrant angles this one in on a length, and she looks to scoop it over long-on. It sails to Gardner who makes no mistake this time, moving across and bringing it in. 113-3

Ball 7: That’s four! Lovely stroke from van Niekerk! Lauren Bell tries to angle it back onto the pads, but the bounce allows the South African to push it through covers, beating the diving fielder in the ring and it traverses to the rope. 7-0

Ball 16: Four more! Georgia Adams has her first boundary. This time, it’s Tara Norris who pitches it just short of what she would have liked, allowing Adams to step up and knock it right over to long-on, with the bounce for four. 21-0

Ball 17: But she goes this time! Tara Norris strikes back. Wider and fuller, she looks to open up the angle and fire over backward square, but Mara Bouchier was quick to react, covering the distance and jogging in to catch at her midriff. 21-1

Ball 26: Stumped! That’s Wilson who has to go. Amanda-Jade Wellington has got this spot on. It’s a length ball, wider and slower, and Wilson looks to slog, but the turn beats her bat and Rudd is primed to whip off the bails with her back foot away from home. 24-2

Ball 27: Great stroke by Kapp first off! No need to get her eye in, as she reads the line from Wellington and utterly nails the cover drive. 28-2

Ball 32: Four more for Kapp! Wider from Lauren Bell, there is a point fielder in play for the drive, but she reads it well and fires back over mid-off, sailing over the ring and running to the rope. 33-2

Ball 54: Six for Kapp, with a drop! Very much needed! They're going to need a couple more of those to catch up. Stefanie Taylor floats it up, and Kapp leans into it, whacking it over long-off, where Gaby Lewis looks to grab over her head, but it comes right back out and over the rope. 57-2

Ball 64: Taken! Kapp has to walk. She'll be frustrated at this, because this isn't Wellington's finest ball. Tossed up on middle, Kapp rushes in to it a bit, and ends up lobbing to Lewis who waits at mid-off. 64-3

Ball 69: Caught and bowled! Lauren Bell strikes, and Mady Villiers walks for one. Fuller from Bell, Villiers looks to fire to long-off, but it's not at all middled and it is chipped right back into the mitts of the bowler. Real window for the Brave. 66-4

Ball 72: Four more for Van Niekerk!  A much needed boundary. Stefanie Taylor tosses this right up, and it's full, allowing van Niekerk to shuffle back before launching through covers. 70-4

Ball 80: Got 'er! Capsey goes. Fi Morris has one. A bit fuller and wide of off stump, Capsey takes a couple of steps out and looks to whack it over cover, but the top edge fires it right to the fielder at short third man! 79-5

Ball 81: Taken! That's another! Dane van Niekerk goes, and Wellington has three. She pitches this full, angling in to middle, and van Niekerk looks to slog sweep over square, but it sails to the midwicket rope where Sophia Dunkley makes the grab! 79-6

Ball 84: And there's the seventh wicket! Make that four for Amanda-Jade Wellington. Tossed on a length on middle, Jo Gardner comes out of crease looking to slog, but the turn beats her edge, and Carla Rudd is ready again to take the bails with the batter a long way from home. 80-7

ajwellington1608202101

Ball 86: Edged and taken! Lauren Bell has her next. It's fuller from Bell, wide of off stump, and Bryce looks to drive. It catches the edge and it dinks back to Rudd who you just can't keep out of the game. 80-8

Ball 87: Bowled 'er! Two-for-two! This is about to be over very quickly. Full, right onto middle and off, and Tash Farrant is simply outpaced, she can't dig it out and the bails light up! 80-9

Ball 94: That's that! Shrubsole bowls the winner! Looks for the big one, and Ismail holes out to mid-off. Somehow, the Brave have defended a below average total by 30 runs! 85-10A/O

Sophia Dunkley, named Match Hero, said on the bowling: "It was an outstanding performance. We probably thought we didn't have as many as we would have liked on the board, but we defended it really well, took wickets throughout - Amanda was outstanding with the ball."

On her half-century, she added "It wasn't the prettiest innings ever! But I think it did a job and got us to a score that we could defend, and put them under a bit of pressure."

"We've had a lot of different people stand up for us and be match-winners. It's been a different person every game. Going into that final, we've got confidence, that we can all do a job. We might face Oval [Invincibles] in the final so to get a win over them today puts us in good stead."
