The world’s No.1 ranked Test batsman, Steve Smith, will represent Sydney Sixers in this year’s Big Bash League - the Australian’s first Big Bash campaign since 2014.

The 30-year-old will be available for selection after Australia’s three-match one-day international series in India, with the third ODI taking place on January 19.

The batsman would therefore potentially be available for the Sixers’ final two regular season games and the post-season if Sydney qualify.

Smith will be making a return to the franchise, having captained his side to the Big Bash title in the competition’s inaugural year.

"When the schedule came out and I saw there was a chance to wear the Magenta again I jumped at the opportunity and look forward to joining up with the team after my January national team commitments have ended," Smith said.

Sixers head coach, Greg Shipperd added: "While I know the fans will and should be excited by this development, our players will benefit from his skills, support and perspectives on the game.

"Steve was instrumental in our recruitment of Josh Philippe and Josh, along with other youngsters in our squad like Jack Edwards, Lloyd Pope, Tom Curran and Justin Avendano, will be the better for sharing a dressing room with an Australian great."

Smith’s addition has seen New South Wales skipper Peter Nevill released from the team.
