England under-19 batsman Tom Clark has signed his first professional contract with Sussex.

After being drafted in to make his first-class debut in the final County Championship match of 2019, the 18-year-old left-hander will make the step up from the club's academy in time for the 2020 season.

"It's a dream come true to sign my first professional contract for Sussex, the club I have played for since the age of eight," Clark said.

"Being a professional cricketer has been my ambition since a very young age and to fulfil that is a great honour.

"I’m very grateful for the opportunity presented to me and am excited to continue to work hard to fulfil my goals and help Sussex succeed in the future."

Clark made eight ODI appearances for England's junior side in this summer's tri-series with India and Bangladesh, and news of his first professional contract follows that of teammates Nick Kimber (Surrey), Kasey Aldridge and Lewis Goldsworthy (Somerset), Joey Evison (Nottinghamshire) and Dan Mousley (Warwickshire) earlier this year.

The batsman is one of 16 players named to the Young Lions squad for a tour of the West Indies later this monh, and he will be looking to solidify his place in the side ahead of January's U19 World Cup in South Africa.

"We're very pleased to add Tom to our squad," added Sussex coach Jason Gillespie.

"He got an opportunity last season in the first team and certainly shows plenty of promise.

"Tom also has an excellent attitude and is keen to learn. The coaching staff are looking forward to working with him and helping him take the next steps in his career."
