Sunrisers Hyderabad have appointed Brian Lara as their head coach for the 2023 Indian Premier League.

The former West Indies international, who was a strategic advisor and batting coach for the franchise in 2022, replaces Tom Moody.

Moody, who initially served as head coach of Sunrisers between 2013 and 2019, returned to the helm ahead of the 2022 season following disappointing results under Trevor Bayliss. In 2021, Sunrisers won just three matches.

However, Moody's second stint wasn't as productive as his first, with Sunrisers finishing eighth in the expanded 10-team tournament, winning six matches and losing eight.

Sunrisers Hyderabad have the worst IPL record over the past two season, winning nine matches from 28. Prior to 2021, the franchise reached the playoffs in five consecutive seasons, lifting the title in 2016 and finishing second in 2018.

This will be Lara's first stint as a head coach of a T20 team.
