Nottinghamshire have entrusted Steven Mullaney with nurturing their next generation as part of a three-year player-coach deal.

The 36-year-old stepped away from the club captaincy in October and faces a dual role from 2024.

Installed as second XI captain - though he remains available across all formats - the allrounder will also be part of Peter Moores' backroom team.

Having held roles with Trent Rockets in The Hundred and in the Abu Dhabi T10, this is the next step on the coaching ladder for Mullaney.

Peter Trego spent his final campaign at Trent Bridge leading the second string and captaining during the One-Day Cup campaign and this role is viewed as a similar arrangement.

"This change in roles feels logical for the club and myself, and it's one I'm really keen to throw myself into," said Mullaney, who helped Notts to the 2010 County Championship, List A triumphs in 2013 and 2017 and the T20 Blast in 2017 and 2020.

"I hope I can pass on some of my experience in the game, whether by having direct conversations or them just picking up the way I go about things.

"In doing so we can help bridge the gap between the first and second team so that players feel prepared, confident, and know what to expect when they make the step up.

"It was a real passion of mine to get the best out of people when I was captain, and that will be at the core of my philosophy when working with the lads."
