Lizelle Lee, Mignon du Preez, Marizanne Kapp and Chloe Tryon are among 26 women whose teams for the 2021 tournament – following its postponement in 2020 – were confirmed on Tuesday
South African pair Mignon du Preez and Lizelle Lee will both play for Manchester Originals in the inaugural edition of The Hundred.
The experienced batsmen are among 26 women whose teams for the 2021 tournament – following its postponement in 2020 – were confirmed on Tuesday.
Two more South Africa internationals – allrounders Marizanne Kapp and Chloe Tryon – have also been announced as overseas players among the latest batch of signings, representing Oval Invincibles and London Spirit respectively.
Lee said: “I’ve got some fantastic memories of playing in England both internationally and in the Kia Super League and I can’t wait to take part in The Hundred later this year for Manchester Originals. It’s really exciting to be playing in a new competition and I think it’s a great opportunity to continue to grow the women’s game.”
Scottish pair Kathryn Bryce and Abtaha Maqsood have also been signed, with national captain Bryce joining Trent Rockets and 21-year-old leg-spinner Maqsood representing Birmingham Phoenix, alongside Scotland-born England international Kirstie Gordon. Abbey Freeborn has also been confirmed by Trent Rockets, who are coached by Salliann Briggs.
Lizelle Lee is one of four South Africans whose signings have been announced today
Former England internationals Susie Rowe and Sonia Odedra have also been handed deals; Rowe, who returned to the game in 2020 after a five-year break, will play for London Spirit, while Odedra – the last player to make her England debut over the age of 25 in 2014 – has signed for Southern Brave. She will be accompanied there by Lauren Bell, who was part of England’s training squad during the coronavirus-affected summer of 2020. Meanwhile, Emily Arlott and Phoebe Franklin have also joined Phoenix.
Welsh Fire have announced deals for five Western Storm players, four of whom are now professionally contracted full-time domestic players: Alex Griffiths, Georgia Hennessy, Nat Wraith and Sophie Luff are joined by teenage bowler Lauren Filer.
Sarah Taylor's road back to happiness
London Spirit have added holders of domestic contracts at three different regional hubs in Sunrisers’ Amara Carr, South East Stars’ Aylish Cranstone and Western Storm batsman Danielle Gibson.
Carr’s Sunrisers teammate Cordelia Griffiths is one of four new signings for Manchester Originals, along with Danielle Collins, Alice Dyson and Thunder spinner Hannah Jones.
Helen Fenby and Bess Heath, both part of Northern Diamonds’ squad in last year’s Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy, will play for Northern Superchargers. Megan Belt, Eva Gray and Rhianna Southby have signed for Oval Invincibles.
