The seamer suffered a strain to his left hamstring four overs into his spell at The Oval on Sunday and did not bat as his side succumbed to a 21-run defeat against Bangladesh
South Africa’s miserable start to their World Cup went from bad to worse after their defeat to Bangladesh, with Lungi Ngidi ruled out of his side’s next game against India.
The seamer suffered a strain to his left hamstring four overs into his spell at The Oval on Sunday and did not bat as his side succumbed to a 21-run defeat against the subcontinent team.
The Proteas’ team doctor, Mohammed Moosajee, said: “Ngidi sustained sharp discomfort in his left hamstring. We decided he had a hamstring strain. He will be out for week to 10 days.
"He will have a scan tomorrow (Monday). We hope he can be ready for the West Indies match [on 10 June].”
South Africa hope Ngidi will return for their game next Monday.
Ngidi’s injury is an additional woe for Faf du Plessis to deal with, having already lost fellow seamer Anrich Nortje before the competition began, while Dale Steyn has not featured in the opening two games.
Moosajee also revealed that he was hopeful Hashim Amla would return to the South African line-up in time to face India in Southampton. He missed Sunday’s loss after being hit on the helmet by Jofra Archer during Thursday’s 104-run defeat against England in the first match of the tournament.
South Africa’s handling of Amla’s condition has been questioned, after he returned to bat against England after the fall of the sixth wicket, only to pull out of his side’s subsequent match.
“The concussion assessments were done on Thursday and initially the results were inconclusive. Then the next test showed he could bat,” Moosajee added.
"Subsequent to the match, the next day he felt some symptoms, so as a precaution we decided to rest him for this game.”
