Tom Banton has ended any uncertainty over his Somerset future by signing a two-year deal with the club.

The 20-year-old was due to be out-of-contract at the end of 2020 but has penned fresh terms.

Banton made his Somerset debut in 2017 and has gone on to become a star across all formats.

"I always wanted to stay here," said the youngster. "I love this place and I love the boys in the dressing room.

"I’ve been given freedom throughout this year and it’s always nice to be able to go out to bat without feeling any pressure.

"The support we get here is incredible. It doesn’t matter if it’s a four-day game or a T20, we always get good crowds.

"What a year it’s been. It was great to win the Royal London One-Day Cup and hopefully, we can continue our push for the Championship in the next two games."

During a campaign which will end with the exits of Marcus Trescothick and Peter Trego, Banton has shown that the future at Taunton is more than bright.

His invention saw him smashes 549 runs in the T20 Blast, the second highest tally in the competition behind teammate Babar Azam.

In the One-Day Cup he inspired Somerset to the title with two centuries and three fifties, including in the final against Hampshire at Lord's.

And as Somerset chase a first-ever County Championship title, the Buckinghamshire-born batsman has hit 525 runs at an average of 42.23.

Director of cricket Andy Hurry added: "We are absolutely delighted to have secured Tom to the club for an additional two years. He is an undoubted talent and his performances across all three formats this season have clearly made a positive impact on our cricket.

"He is a very exciting talent and we look forward to supporting his development over the next few years and to his performances contributing to Somerset winning more silverware."
