Sharafuddin Ashraf replaces Asghar Afghan in Afghanistan squad

Sharafuddin Ashraf has been approved as a replacement for Asghar Afghan in Afghanistan’s T20 World Cup squad after the former captain announced his international retirement.

Afghan ended his 17-year international career following his side’s win over Namibia on Sunday.

The addition of Ashraf, the 26-year-old allrounder, has been given the go-ahead by the event’s technical committee, with an ICC statement explaining that the request was given approval “following concerns over Asghar’s mental wellbeing”.

“It’s a very hard decision when you get to retirement,” said Afghan, speaking after victory against Namibia, “but I decided for my youngsters they should come. It was too important, and they should come and feel the pressure of the World Cup.

“From the day I started cricket, I played for my nation and my country. I feel proud and I was happy to play for my nation and country. And all the supporters who support me, I take strength from them.”
