The Cricketer looks at the stand-out displays from the first one-day international as South Africa upset the world champions at Centurion
Quinton de Kock (107): Perhaps allowed England to wriggle away with some defensive fields when it looked as though the visitors might set a decent target. He made up for that with the bat and then some, going to a 15th ODI ton with a masterful knock. 8
Reeza Hendricks (6): Given the inroads his teammates would make, it was a rather pitiful downfall for Hendricks. 3
Temba Bavuma (98): Put on 173 with De Kock to all-but secure victory for South Africa and it was a serene performance in just his third ODI. Cruelly denied his second century by Chris Jordan. Caught Morgan well in the slips. 8
Rassie van der Dussen (38*): Superb run-out got rid of Joe Root as the wickets flowed for the hosts. With the bat, came in to confirm England's defeat with a polished knock, albeit under no pressure whatsoever. Continues to impress in his short international career 7
JJ Smuts (1-43 & 7*): Only Shamsi went at fewer runs per over than the ODI debutant and he improved as the innings wore on. Only really looked vulnerable when he offered up width. Was clearly nervous when he came to the crease with the bat. 6
David Miller (DNB): Caught Chris Woakes at mid-off with his only notable contribution of the match. 6
Andile Phehlukwayo (1-47 & DNB): A poor drop off Roy at mid-wicket was hardly a good start and he looked every bit a bowler who has spent a few months out of the international game. Should grow into the series. 5
Beuran Hendricks (1-46 & DNB): Just nine runs and a wicket came from his final two overs - a crucial spell which kept England from smuggling their way to a decent total. Offered good variation. 6
Jason Roy took the game to South Africa before suffering a familiar demise
Lungi Ngidi (0-42 & DNB): Didn't really test the England batsman on his return from injury. South Africa may have to wait to benefit from his return to full fitness. 4
Lutho Sipamla (1-40 & DNB): Claimed his maiden South Africa wicket to get rid of Chris Woakes to spark scenes of delight among his family in the stands. The reality is he was easy to play on a benign surface and was routinely punished when he got his lengths wrong. 5
Tabraiz Shamsi (3-38 & DNB): The pick of the Proteas bowlers with three scalps, while he also yielded another when Joe Root was run out. Deceived England's middle-order in the air and could cause them more problems as the series goes on. 7
Jason Roy (32): Triggered memories of the Ashes with an innings dominated with chances, miss-timed strokes, glorious boundaries, and a predictable decline. 5
Jonny Bairstow (19): Didn't look comfortable at any stage during his innings, as Roy was knocking it around at the other end. Got out to a nothing ball from Phehlukwayo. 4
Joe Root (17 & 1-35): Was unfortunate to be run-out before his knock really got going. The typical club player would say it was his call with the ball behind square but as he ran half-way down Van der Dussen picked up a threw down the stumps impressively. 5
Eoin Morgan (11): Went for a simple length ball from Shamsi which didn't do a lot and was excellently caught by Bavuma. Not a great way to start the next four-year cycle. Rotating his bowlers as he could but without success. 4
Joe Denly (87 & 0-41): As wickets fell around him he played the anchor role perfectly, claiming his highest and fastest ODI score. Without him England would have posted a pitiful total. Bowled poorly, with some daft deliveries. 7
Tabraiz Shamsi trapped Tom Banton to leave England five down
Tom Banton (18): Played across the line when something more conservative was needed. Major questions should be asked over why he was selected to bat at six, and that decision was exposed when he came in at 83 for 4. 5
Sam Curran (7 & 0-28): Wasn't able to use his variable pace on this occasion and was restricted to just five overs. 5
Chris Woakes (40 & 1-36): One of few players who will leave Newlands with their head held high. Performed like England's first-choice white-ball bowler, taking the opening wicket before keeping the runs down. But lacked support. 7
Tom Curran (15* & 0-38): Named in the Big Bash League team of the tournament but there was little to like about the Surrey man's performance in Cape Town. Too many loose deliveries which helped give the home side a foothold. 4
Chris Jordan (1* & 1-31): Went for 18 from his first two overs but returned for his second spell and performed well at the death, to make South Africa have to wait for their victory. The villain in the eyes of the hosts after denying Bavuma his century. 6
Matt Parkinson (DNB & 0-48): Very tidy on his ODI debut after a long wait for his next international outing this winter. Bowled well, considering the circumstances. Hopefully, the England selectors persist with him. 6
