Somerset have signed Lewis Gregory to a 12-month contract extension that secures his services to the end of the 2022 county summer.

The seam-bowling allrounder claimed a career-best 55 first-class wickets during the 2019 season and could make his senior international debut during England's T20 tour of New Zealand, starting Friday.

Devon-born Gregory, who had signed to a three-year extension in 2018 amid noted interest from four other counties, hopes the new tie-up can see the club challenge for more trophies following their One-Day Cup triumph at Lord's in May.

"It’s a really exciting time for the club and I’m delighted to have committed my future to Somerset because it’s the club that I love.

"To win a trophy with this group of players was incredibly special and hopefully that will be the first of many.

Lewis Gregory celebrates while captaining England Lions against an Australian XI in July

After being named England Lions captain in the winter and taking four wickets in a pre-Ashes game in Canterbury, Gregory joined Somerset teammate Jack Leach in the Test squad ahead of England's one-off clash with Ireland in July.

Announcing the news, Somerset's director of cricket Andy Hurry appears confident that securing 27-year-old Gregory's future with the club will bring further honours to the player and Taunton alike.

"Lewis has been one of our most consistently impressive performers across all three formats over the last few years," he said.

"He is an outstanding player, a genuine leader and his contributions on the field have won us a number of matches. His exceptional performances have rightly been rewarded with an international call-up this winter.

"There is no doubt about it; Lewis is an allrounder of genuine quality and everyone associated with the club is delighted that he has signed this extension."
