Lauren Filer will make her England debut in the Ashes Test match against Australia at Trent Bridge this week.

Filer, 22, has been selected for the series opener ahead of Issy Wong, following an impressive run of form over the course of the 2023 summer. Wong, who was the surprise selection in last summer's Test against South Africa, has been struggling for rhythm in recent weeks.

It means a baptism of fire for Filer, who has five Charlotte Edwards Cup wickets and eight Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy scalps this year. She has the capacity to swing the ball away from the right-hander, and is highly thought of within the England setup.

Fast-bowling coach Matt Mason described Filer as "a cool head" in an interview with The Cricketer earlier this month.

"She has real pace – it is raw and needs work, but she's really exciting," he said.

Danielle Gibson is the other member of the Test squad to miss out, with Danni Wyatt set to make her first red-ball appearance for her country.

Wyatt has been a feature up and down the white-ball order for some time but has won her place in the Test squad ahead of Alice Capsey.

Earlier this week, Capsey and Alice Davidson-Richards had been released from the group, and will feature in a T20 for England A against their Australian equivalents at Loughborough on Wednesday (June 21).

The Test is the Ashes curtain-raiser, and is worth four points to the winners in the multi-format series. It is scheduled to get under way at 11am on Thursday (June 22).
