Jenny Gunn and Danni Wyatt, both of whom were part of England’s ODI squad, have been left out. They will remain with the England Academy squad for their T20 fixtures against Australia A and Ireland
England Women have announced a 13-player squad for their must-win Ashes Test against Australia at Taunton, which begins on Thursday.
Kirstie Gordon, who took eight wickets for England Academy in their practice game against Australia, has been called into the squad.
Jenny Gunn and Danni Wyatt, meanwhile, both of whom were part of England’s ODI squad, have been left out. They will remain with the England Academy squad for their T20 fixtures against Australia A and Ireland.
Fran Wilson and left-arm spinner Alex Hartley will remain with the Test squad as cover.
Any result other than an England win would see Australia retain the Women’s Ashes, having taken a six-nil lead in the series’ points system by claiming victory in all three ODIs.
The winner of the Test will claim four points, with two each if the game ends in a draw. Australia need just two more points to ensure that they cannot lose the seven-match multi-format series.
England captain Heather Knight admitted that her team had benefited from a practice victory against Australia A, in which Tammy Beaumont, Amy Jones and Nat Sciver all struck centuries.
"It's obviously a very important match for us and we need to win it to stay in the series,” she said.
"The beauty of the multi-format points series means we're still very much in the battle, a normal bilateral series that finished like the ODIs would have been finished but we can get back to 6-4 with a win in the Test match and that's exciting.
"The warm-up at Millfield was ideal. We saw batters get runs and spend time in the middle and the bowlers performed well to bowl out the opposition twice on a flat one. We're raring to go again to get back into the Ashes."
Squad: Heather Knight (captain), Tammy Beaumont, Katherine Brunt, Kate Cross, Sophie Ecclestone, Georgia Elwiss, Kirstie Gordon, Amy Jones, Laura Marsh, Nat Sciver, Anya Shrubsole, Lauren Winfield, Sarah Taylor (wicketkeeper)
