"We are much more than a team, but a family which has come together and built a connection with our fans through our relentless hard work," a statement to announce the news read.
"The new brand logo and name are an extension to our undying spirit of fighting against all odds and celebrating the true spirit of Punjab."
Confirmation of the moves comes in the week of the IPL auction. Punjab Kings have a nine total slots to fill and can acquire an additional five overseas players.
Of the sides currently competing in the IPL, Kings are among just three who have never won the competition.
In 13 outings they have only twice qualified for the play-offs. In 2014 they finished top of the group stage and progressed to the final where they lost to Kolkata Knight Riders.
